School Lunch and Breakfast for All

(St. Paul, MN) —   A bill making school lunch and breakfast free for all students in the state is headed to the Minnesota Senate floor.   The Senate Finance committee approved the measure today. Sponsor Senator Heather Gustafson of Vadnais Heights says “It puts money back in the pockets of families. It makes sure students have what they need in school and most importantly it ensures that our children have the food they need to learn and be healthy.”  Republican Senator Eric Pratt of Prior Lake says it’s another government mandate that will be underfunded –  “We have local school boards to address these issues. And 200 million dollars is roughly three percent onto formula. And if this is an issue for a community they should be able to address it.” The universal school meal bill passed the Minnesota House last month.
