Cold and wet conditions curbed the number of days
suitable for fieldwork to 1.5 during the week ending
October 6, 2019, according to USDA’s National
Agricultural Statistics Service. Field activities for the week
were minimal as already saturated fields received more
rain, with cold and overcast days not allowing for fields to
dry out. Some reports of frost were received out of the
northern half of Minnesota. Disease related concerns in
specialty crops are starting to show up.
Topsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent very short,
1 percent short, 44 percent adequate and 55 percent
surplus. Subsoil moisture condition was rated 0 percent
very short, 1 percent short, 53 percent adequate and
46 percent surplus.
Corn dented or beyond was 94 percent, 17 days behind last
year and 15 days behind the 5-year average. Thirtynine percent of corn was mature, 20 days behind last year
and 15 days behind normal. Corn harvested for silage
reached 58 percent this week, 15 days behind average.
Corn condition was rated 54 percent good to excellent,
improving marginally from the previous week. Ninetysix percent of soybeans were turning color or beyond,
2 weeks behind last year and 10 days behind the average.
Eighty percent of soybeans have begun dropping leaves,
13 days behind last year and 9 days behind normal.
Eight percent of the soybean crop has been harvested,
19 days behind last year and 15 days behind average.
Soybean condition was rated 56 percent good to excellent.
Spring wheat harvested reached 98 percent, just over
1 month behind last year and 16 days behind average. Little
progress was made over the week due to heavy rains.
Dry edible beans harvested reached 48 percent this week,
18 days behind the average. Dry edible bean condition
rated 64 percent good to excellent, declining from the
previous week. Sunflower condition rated 75 percent good
to excellent, improving slightly from the previous week.
Potatoes harvested reached 68 percent, 8 days behind
average. Sugarbeet harvest was 17 percent complete,
1 week behind normal. Sugarbeet condition was rated
81 percent good to excellent.
Pasture condition rated 56 percent good to excellent,
declining from the previous week.
